『はだしのゲン』全10巻を所有する御市の小中学校39校すべてが貴教育委員会の指示に従がって閉架措置をとったとの報道を誠に残念に思います。
39人もの小中学校の校長すべてが貴教育委員会の指示に従ったことが奇異に感じられます。異議を唱える校長は誰一人おられなかったのでしょうか。
『はだしのゲン』は少年ジャンプに掲載されて今年6月で40年になりました。
現場教師の尽力により多くの学校の図書館に置かれることとなって以来、ゲンは生徒に自分の体験を語り、戦争の愚かさと平和の大切さを語り続けてきたことでしょう。
生徒たちはゲンから原爆の恐ろしさだけではなく肉親を思う心、他人を思いやる心を学ぶと共に、どんなに苦しい状況の中にあってもユーモアを忘れず、麦のごとく強く生き抜くゲンに共感したことでしょう。教育の現場で彼は大任を果たしているのです。
人類が再びヒロシマ、ナガサキの悲劇を繰り返さないためには、唯一の被爆国の国民として私たち親や教師は子どもたちに核被害の実相を伝えなければなりません。『はだしのゲン』はその役目を担うにふさわしい作品であります。『はだしのゲン』は子どもに人気のある本ではありますが、同時に大人が子供たちに読ますべき本だと思います。
絵の残忍な箇所を問題視されていますが、作者中沢啓治氏は「戦争や原爆を甘い糖衣錠で包んで子供に見せれば『戦争と原爆はこんなものか』と甘く考えてなめてしまう」ことを懸念していました。「それでも随分表現を和らげた」とも語っていました。
読む、読まないは生徒の自由です。しかしヒロシマの実相を伝えるこの優れた作品を生徒が自由に読めるように環境づくりをするのは唯一の被爆国の教育者が担うべき役割ではないのでしょうか。
御市小中学校の図書館から『はだしのゲン』を締め出さないで下さい。今一度閉架措置に対して再考をお願いするものであります。

A Letter of Protest to the Board of Education of Matsue City
about the move to restrict access to the comic “Barefoot Gen”
I am very disappointed at the news that all thirty-nine elementary and junior high schools in your city that hold ten volumes of “Barefoot Gen” have restricted access to the books according to instructions from the Board of Education.
I find it strange that all thirty-nine head teachers followed your instructions. Weren’t there any school principals who disagreed with that?
It is forty years in June this year since “Barefoot Gen” was published in the boys’ magazine “Jump.” Gen has continued to tell about his own experiences, the stupidity of war, and the importance of peace. Thanks to the efforts of many classroom teachers, a lot of schools have come to carry “Barefoot Gen” over the years.
Gen has carried out a very important task in the classroom. Students have learned from Gen not only about the terror of the atomic bombs but also about love for their families and consideration for others. They empathize with Gen, who is full of humor and strength, surviving and thriving like wheat no matter what hardships he faces.
In order that human beings not repeat the tragedy of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, parents and teachers in Japan, the only A-bombed country in the world, have a responsibility to convey the reality of nuclear destruction and casualties to children. “Barefoot Gen” is an appropriate medium for this role. It is popular among children and it is a book that adults should encourage children to read.
You say that you regard some brutal pictures in the book as a problem, but Mr. Nakazawa was afraid that children might make light of wars and atomic bombs if he showed children sugar-coated images. Even so, he said that he had considerably softened the images in Gen.
Students should be free to choose to read Gen or not. It should be the role of educators in the only A-bombed country to provide a suitable environment in which children can freely read this excellent work that tells the facts about Hiroshima.
I request that you not keep “Barefoot Gen” out of the libraries of elementary and junior high schools in your city. I make an earnest appeal to you to reconsider your attempt to restrict access to the books.
